Ross Kentner Commentary for Tuesday, May 22nd 2007:
Looking back at last Thursday's appearance by the Glenn Miller Orchestra at the Harry Lumley Bayshore, there is much to praise and little to criticize.
First, it's just wonderful that somebody took the initiative to get the Bayshore back into the entertainment business. Even more so, that it's a new local company run by the likes of Barry Hamill, Greg Macivor and Dave Carr. And my hat is off to them for a very classy evening that produced $10-thousand for cabin #6 at the Rotary Youth Camp at Presqu'isle.
If I regret anything it's that the band would probably have played on, but people started leaving early. Maybe they had to get up for work Friday morning? Maybe they were tired, having lined up to get in, lined up again for tickets, lined up then again for food and lined up all night for drinks! When did it ever take half an hour to get 12-hundred people into the arena before? And, how could you run short of wine at 7 o'clock?
But let's not put too fine a point on this when there are so many details for an evening like this and most were well thought out and executed. I heard a lot of complaints about the table arrangement, but let's face it…all the tables can't face the orchestra. This was a dance, not a concert. I think everybody who danced (and who didn't) got a personal wink from Music Director Larry O'Brien. And doesn't he play a heavenly trombone?
It was a great Homecoming 2007 event…one that showcased our own Razzmatazz and the culinary feats of Owen Sound's fine restaurants. CFOS is proud to have been a sponsor and looks forward to more class acts from Macarmill Productions.
